Wimbledon: A Great Location for Family Photoshoots in Southwest London
By Irma Arrowsmith, Family Photographer
When I photograph families in London, one of the places I often suggest is Wimbledon. Known mostly for tennis, it also happens to be home to some of the most peaceful and photogenic green spaces in the city. Whether you're local or nearby, it’s a fantastic option for a relaxed, natural family shoot, especially if you prefer being surrounded by nature rather than crowds.
I’m not based in Wimbledon, but I regularly travel there for sessions. It’s a location that works well year-round and offers a mix of open space, woodland, and quiet corners, all great for family photography that feels unforced and genuine.
Why Choose Wimbledon for Your Family Photos?
Wimbledon offers something many London locations don’t: space. From the wide stretches of Wimbledon Common to the more structured gardens of Cannizaro Park, there’s plenty of room for children to move freely, and enough variety to keep the session interesting without having to travel far between spots.
It’s easy to get to, but it doesn’t feel hectic, which makes a big difference when photographing families with young children. It’s also a flexible setting, whether you want informal, documentary-style images or a few more traditional family portraits.
Favourite Photoshoot Spots in Wimbledon
Here are the places I tend to come back to when photographing families in the area:
Wimbledon Common
A large, open area with woodland trails, grassy clearings, and quiet pockets of shade. There’s plenty of space for little ones to run around, and the light through the trees can be lovely. It's a good choice if you're after something simple and natural.
Cannizaro Park
Located right next to the Common, Cannizaro Park is smaller and more structured. It has formal gardens, flower beds, a walled garden, and winding paths: perfect if you want a bit more visual variety in your gallery. It’s usually fairly quiet too, which helps keep things relaxed.
Wimbledon Village
If you'd like to include some more urban backdrops, Wimbledon Village has some interesting textures, from brick buildings to quiet side streets. It can be a nice addition if you're after a slightly different feel alongside the greenery.
What a Session Looks Like
My approach to family photography is low-key and adaptable. I’ll give you some direction when needed, but the focus is on keeping things natural, especially with children. A typical session in Wimbledon might involve a short walk, stopping here and there depending on the light and what’s happening.
We’ll usually take a mix of images, some playful, some quieter, and if you’d like a few more structured family portraits, we can always include those too. The aim is to keep it relaxed, with no pressure to perform.
