Photographing Families in London: A Chapter That Still Shapes My Work

Even though I’m no longer based in London, the city will always feel like home. I lived there for over ten years, photographing London families for over five years and learning to notice the small moments that make family life so unique. Those years shaped my approach to photography, teaching me that the best images are often the ones that unfold naturally - the hugs, the laughter, the quiet pauses that tell your family’s story.

During that time, I was fortunate to be recognised as an award-winning photographer and even voted one of London’s best family photographers. While these honours are meaningful, what matters most to me is capturing families in a way that feels honest, warm, and genuine.

A Gentle, Story-Led Approach

My style is calm, documentary-led, and child-focused. I don’t ask families to pose or perform - instead, I let the moments unfold naturally. Some of my favourite images come from simple, everyday interactions: a parent helping a toddler tie their shoes, a shared joke between siblings, or the quiet moments just before bedtime. These are the memories that families treasure most, and they’re what I aim to capture.

London taught me how to see the beauty in these small, fleeting moments. The city’s light, streets, parks, and homes became the backdrop for countless family stories. Even now, when I photograph elsewhere, the lessons I learned in London continue to guide how I observe, frame, and preserve connection.

Capturing Real Families in Real Life

One of the things I love most about family photography is that every session is different.

  • At home: Some families prefer the comfort of their own space. Here, I can quietly document the little routines and interactions that define their daily lives.

  • Outdoors: Parks, gardens, and city streets offer another kind of magic. The children are free to run, explore, and play, while I capture those candid, joyful moments.

Each family has its rhythm, and my job is to follow it. It’s a gentle approach, but one that consistently results in images that feel authentic, heartfelt, and timeless.

Staying Connected to London Families

Even though I now live in Sussex, I still photograph lots of families in London. Some families book sessions when I return for visits; others travel to meet me. Having photographed in the city for over a decade means I know the best light, the quiet corners, and the spaces where families feel comfortable - knowledge that comes through in the photographs themselves.

Being recognised as one of the best family photographers in London isn’t something I take lightly. It reflects years of capturing real family life - messy, tender, joyful, and chaotic - in a way that resonates with those who trust me to tell their story.

Stories That Stay With Me

Over the years, I’ve photographed families in countless homes and parks across London. Some memories stand out:

  • A rainy afternoon in Hampstead Heath, photographing a boy as he explored the puddles, completely absorbed in the moment.

  • A morning at home in Hither Green, capturing a newborn asleep while older siblings moved quietly around the room.

  • A photo session in Clapham Common, where the family ate ice cream and played together, with the moments unfolding naturally.

It’s these ordinary, unscripted moments that stay with me - and with the families - long after the session ends.

Why Families Choose This Approach

Families often tell me that the images “feel like us.” That’s the goal. I aim to capture the real interactions, the emotions, and the connections that define each family. My work is not about perfection or posed portraits; it’s about creating honest images that reflect who you are in this moment in time.

If You’re Looking for a Natural Family Photographer in London

If you’re searching for a family photographer who focuses on connection over posed perfection, I’d love to work with you. I bring a gentle, documentary-led approach, informed by my time living and photographing in London, and continue to work with families in the city during my visits.

Being award-winning and voted one of London’s best family photographers is part of my story, but what really matters is the story I create with each family - memories captured authentically, tenderly, and for a lifetime. If you’d like to know a bit more about me, please have a read here.
