Family Photoshoot in Brighton North Laine
Brighton's North Laine is always a good backdrop for family photography. With colourful streets, bold murals and plenty happening around every corner, there's no shortage of interesting places to explore.
A tiny bit of rain in the air, two very active boys, and a dog meant we just kept moving and photographed things as we went.
We walked through the area rather than stopping in one fixed spot, using whatever we came across along the way - painted walls, shopfronts, side streets and quieter corners just off the main routes.
North Laine works well for this approach because it changes quickly as you move through it. One minute you’ve got bold graffiti and colour everywhere, the next you’re in a much quieter residential street just behind it.
Most of the session was about following that energy rather than trying to slow things down. The boys explored as we went, the dog was very much part of it, and we just paused whenever something caught their attention.
Brighton is particularly good for families who don’t want a traditional posed session. The mix of colour, texture and movement in the streets means there’s always something to react to, whether that’s a wall of graffiti, a doorway, or a quieter side street.
We made use of painted walls, street art, shopfronts and simple backgrounds throughout the session, but nothing was planned in advance beyond meeting up and walking through the area.
Sessions like this tend to be quite fast-moving, especially with younger children and pets, but that’s usually what makes them work. Rather than trying to control it too much, I prefer to follow what’s happening and photograph it as it unfolds.
The result is a mix of movement and quieter moments, with the streets of Brighton acting as a constantly changing backdrop.
