Family Photographer Sussex: What to Expect From a Relaxed Family Photoshoot

If you're thinking about booking a family photoshoot but feeling slightly nervous about being in front of the camera, you're not alone. One of the first things many parents tell me is, "We're not very photogenic" or "My children never sit still!"

The good news is that a relaxed family photoshoot isn't about perfect behaviour, matching outfits or smiling at the camera on command. It's about capturing your family as you are right now - the connections, personalities, laughter and little moments that make your family unique.

As a family photographer in Sussex, I work with families across Brighton, Hove, Lewes, Worthing, Shoreham and throughout East and West Sussex, creating natural, documentary-style photographs that tell the story of family life.

Here's what you can expect from a relaxed family photoshoot.

It's More Like Spending Time Together Than Having Your Photo Taken

The biggest misconception about family photography is that you'll spend an hour standing in a line, looking at the camera and trying to persuade your children to smile.

In reality, my sessions are designed to feel much more natural.

We'll go for a walk, explore a favourite outdoor location, play games, chat, cuddle, run, climb, collect sticks, throw stones into the sea or simply spend time together. Rather than directing every movement, I gently guide when needed and allow space for real moments to unfold.

Children don't need to perform, and parents don't need to worry about getting everything right.

The best photographs often happen in between the moments you think matter.

Choosing the Perfect Setting

One of the things I love about family photography in Sussex is the incredible variety of backdrops available. We often begin a session at home, capturing a little of your everyday family life before heading out for an adventure nearby. Alternatively, if there's a place that feels special to your family, we can spend the entire session there.

Whether you're happiest by the sea, wandering through woodland or exploring the open countryside, Sussex offers countless beautiful places for family photographs.

Some popular favourites include:

  • The South Downs

  • Stanmer Park

  • Seven Sisters Country Park

  • Cuckmere Haven

  • Devil's Dyke

  • Friston Forest

  • Brighton & Hove seafront

  • Local parks and green spaces

  • Your own home and garden

The best location is often somewhere that means something to your family. Children tend to feel more relaxed in familiar surroundings, and those personal connections add another layer of meaning to the photographs.

What If My Children Don't Cooperate?

This is probably the question I'm asked most often.

The short answer is: they don't need to.

Children are children. They get distracted, run away, make silly faces, climb things, refuse instructions and sometimes decide they don't want to participate at all.

That's completely normal.

In fact, many of the photographs parents love most are the ones that capture their children's genuine personalities rather than perfectly behaved smiles.

My approach is built around following children's lead rather than fighting against it. If they want to explore, we explore. If they want to run, we run. If they need a snack break, we take one.

There is no pressure for children to behave differently simply because a camera is present.

What Should We Wear?

Honestly, whatever feels like you.

Some families arrive in jeans and trainers, some wear bright colours, some turn up in wellies after a muddy walk. There are no rules.

I want these photographs to reflect your family as you are, not a styled version of yourselves. Wear clothes that are comfortable, practical and make you feel good. If your children are happiest in their favourite jumper, that's absolutely fine by me.

The only thing I tend to suggest avoiding is everyone wearing black from head to toe, as it can lose detail in photographs.

Other than that, don't overthink it. The connection between you is what matters most, not what you're wearing.

Documentary Family Photography Versus Traditional Family Photography

There are many different styles of family photography, and it's worth considering what feels right for your family.

Traditional family photography often focuses on carefully posed portraits, everyone looking at the camera and smiling.

Documentary family photography takes a different approach.

Rather than creating moments, documentary photography observes and captures them as they happen. The focus is on connection, emotion and storytelling rather than perfection.

That doesn't mean there won't be opportunities for beautiful family portraits. It simply means that those portraits happen naturally alongside all the other moments that make up your family life.

Years from now, these photographs won't just remind you what everyone looked like. They'll remind you what it felt like to be together.

The Little Moments Matter Most

When parents book a family photoshoot, they often imagine the finished gallery will be filled with traditional portraits.

Those photographs are certainly part of the story.

But very often, the images families treasure most are the unexpected ones:

  • Tiny hands holding yours

  • A child laughing uncontrollably

  • Siblings sharing a secret joke

  • Wind-blown hair on the beach

  • A cuddle after a fall

  • The way your child looks at you when they think nobody is watching

These everyday moments can feel ordinary at the time, but they become increasingly precious as children grow.

A Family Photoshoot Is About More Than Photographs

Of course, you'll receive a gallery of images to enjoy and share.

But many families tell me that the experience itself becomes a meaningful memory.

Modern family life is busy. Between school, work, activities and endless to-do lists, it can be surprisingly rare to spend uninterrupted time together.

A family photoshoot creates space to slow down, connect and simply enjoy being together for an hour or two.

The photographs become a lasting reminder of that time.

Family Photography Across Sussex

I photograph families throughout Sussex, including Brighton, Hove, Lewes, Shoreham, Worthing and surrounding areas across East and West Sussex.

Whether you'd like an outdoor adventure in the South Downs, a relaxed beach session on the Sussex coast or an at-home documentary session, my aim is always the same: to create honest, natural photographs that reflect your family and the stage of life you're in right now.

Because one day, these everyday moments will be the memories you'll want to hold onto most.
