Twickenham: A Hidden Gem for Family Photoshoots in South London
By Irma Arrowsmith, Natural Family Photographer
As a family photographer, I'm always drawn to locations that feel relaxed, beautiful, and just a little bit special. One place I often recommend to families, especially those in or near South London (apart from my old neighbourhood East Dulwich), is Twickenham. Tucked along the Thames in southwest London, it's a fantastic choice for anyone looking for a calm, natural setting for a family photoshoot.
While I’m not based in Twickenham myself, I love photographing families there. It offers a unique combination of riverside charm, historical gardens, and open green space, perfect for capturing both playful and authentic moments.
Why Choose Twickenham for Your Family Photoshoot?
Twickenham is a brilliant spot for family photography in South London. It combines historical architecture, peaceful river paths, and wide-open green spaces, ideal for families who want beautiful backdrops without the crowds of central London.
It’s also incredibly family-friendly. Children can explore, run around, and just be themselves. Whether you want polished portraits or natural, documentary-style images, Twickenham offers a versatile setting for every kind of shoot.
Top Family Photoshoot Locations in Twickenham
Here are a few of my most-loved places for family photography in Twickenham:
🌿 Marble Hill Park
One of the best-known parks in the area, Marble Hill Park is a dream location for family portraits in Twickenham. It offers expansive fields, ancient trees, and the beautiful backdrop of Marble Hill House.
In spring and summer, the wildflowers and soft light create a romantic, natural atmosphere. Autumn brings golden leaves and cozy tones, perfect for family sessions filled with warmth and connection.
🌊 Twickenham Riverside & Orleans Gardens
If you love the idea of riverside family photos in South London, this is the spot. The Thames towpath here is calm and scenic, with views of weeping willows, colourful boats, and charming Georgian houses.
Orleans Gardens adds another layer of variety with its winding paths, flower beds, and tucked-away benches. It’s ideal for young children and offers plenty of opportunities for movement and play.
🏛 York House Gardens
Looking for something a little different? York House Gardens is a hidden gem that often surprises families. With its Italian-style statues, fountains, and ornamental gardens, it feels a bit like stepping into a storybook. It’s especially lovely for more styled or elegant family photoshoots in Twickenham, and it’s usually very peaceful.
What to Expect During a Family Session in Twickenham
My sessions are relaxed, unposed, and focused on capturing connection, whether that’s cuddles under a tree, giggles by the river, or a quiet hand-hold as you explore together.
A typical session in Twickenham might involve a gentle walk, with stops along the way for spontaneous moments and meaningful portraits. I always tailor the session to your family’s energy, so whether you have toddlers on the move or teens who’d rather not pose, we’ll find a rhythm that feels natural and fun.
