A First Birthday in Clapham | Capturing the First Year Milestone
First birthdays are beautifully unpredictable. No one really knows how the day will unfold — there might be happy tears, skipped naps, or cake eaten straight from the top. That’s part of the charm. These gatherings aren’t about perfection; they’re about marking the end of a wild, transformative year with the people who’ve been part of it. I love being there with my camera, quietly catching the little moments that parents are often too busy to see.
Recently, I photographed a first birthday party in Clapham, not far from the Common. It was held at home, with just the right amount of chaos – balloons, snacks everywhere, and kids darting in and out of the frame. There was nothing staged about it, which is exactly how I like to work. Just honest, natural photos of the day as it unfolds.
Why I Photograph Kids’ Parties
I know how fast the first year goes – and how much of these early days can feel like a blur. At birthday parties, parents are usually busy making sure everyone’s fed, that naps don’t run too late, and that no one’s eaten too much cake too quickly. You’re in it, but not always able to see it.
That’s where I come in. I photograph kids’ parties in a documentary style – no posing, no interrupting, just quietly capturing the atmosphere and details you might not notice until later. It’s less about the “perfect” shot and more about creating a set of images that actually feel like the day.
Working in Clapham
Clapham’s one of my favourite areas in London to work in – it’s full of families, there are always lovely homes or local venues to shoot in, and having Clapham Common nearby is a bonus if you’re heading outside for part of the day. It’s got that mix of community and calm that really suits family photography.
